CONSTITUTION FOR THE RHETORIC SOCIETY OF OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

ARTICLE I: NAME

The organization will be called the Rhetoric Society of Old Dominion University (RSODU).

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE

The RSODU is established to promote the study of rhetoric, to provide opportunities for students to network and socialize, and to support professional and scholarly development through workshops, colloquia, and travel.

ARTICLE III: RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS

To remain in good standing, members must:

Attend at least one meeting per semester

Participate in at least one event per semester

Remain in good academic standing with the university.

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS

Duties

The president will preside over all meetings, set the agenda for monthly meetings, and speak on behalf of the organization at public events. The president will also monitor and record university points and standards to ensure that the organization remains in good standing.

The vice-president will maintain the organization’s relationship with our parent organization, the Rhetoric Society of America, and will assist the president in the performance of his or her assigned duties.

The secretary will maintain contact with members and will draft correspondence and advertisements for the organization.

The treasurer will maintain records of the group’s funds and will be responsible for collecting and paying out funds.

The historian will record minutes at all meetings and archive all records for the group’s events.

Qualifications: Officers must be enrolled in at least one course at Old Dominion and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Term: Officers wills serve for the term of one year beginning in the fall semester.

Removal procedure: Officers may be removed from their position by a majority vote from at least 50% of active members.

Replacement procedure: If an officer is removed, the remaining officers and the adviser will appoint an interim officer to fill that position until the next election.

ARTICLE V: ELECTIONS

Frequency: Elections will occur at the end of each spring semester, no later than one week before spring finals.

Procedure for nominations: A call for nominations will be issued by email to all members. Members will be given seven (7) days to submit nominations.

Procedure for elections: All nominated persons will be listed in a ballot that will be emailed to all members. For each office, the nominee who receives the most votes will be elected to that office.

ARTICLE VI: MEETINGS

Frequency of organization meetings: RSODU will meet at least four (4) times per semester (generally once a month).

Frequency of officer meetings: Officers will meet at least once a semester.

ARTICLE VII AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION

Procedure for recommending amendments: Amendments must be offered in writing at the beginning of an official meeting.

Procedure for voting on recommended amendments: Any amendments offered will be voted on via email. Amendments will be approved by a majority vote from at least 50% of active members.
